A Modern Haven for Art
One of my favorite projects remains Cassilhaus, the home of Ellen Cassilly (the architect) and Frank Konhaus, who’s company is Kontek. The builder was the esteemable Leon Meyers. Their home reflects their passion for the Arts and is an artist-in-residence retreat and art gallery as well. Check out Frank’s blog to learn more. There was also a nice article in the New York Times.

    "It's Mine"
I started by building both staircases. The artist’s residence staircase was Ash, where I tried to make the grain pattern continuous as much as possible. The main staircase was Maple. The beautiful steel railings designed by Ellen were fabricated and installed by Marc Maiorana. It was such a pleasure to work with a craftman as skilled as Marc . I came out and bored holes for the railing and everything fit perfectly.

I then took on the Dining Room canopy, with it’s integral wiring chase for the fixtures above their table. The canopy ribs are notched and lay onto the Kitchen ceiling, becoming the battens for the Cedar ceiling, while the spaces between the canopy ribs become the ceiling boards. I used a router and some jigs to notch out the tops of the ribs for let-in braces and for placing the hole in each one for the suspension support tubing. We tied in the Kitchen ceiling in alignment with the canopy and it turned out beautifully.

Later on Frank and Ellen asked me back to install a cat door. True to form, Ellen sketched a design that fit the rest of the house. The cat thought it was nice too.
